Installing Docker Engine on Ubuntu 22.04

OS requirements

Ubuntu Jammy 22.04 (LTS)

Set up and install Docker Engine from Docker’s apt repository.

Other methods:

  • Docker Engine comes bundled with Docker Desktop for Linux.

  • Install it manually and manage upgrades manually.

  • Use convenience scripts.

Set up the repository

Update the apt package index and install packages to allow apt to use a repository over HTTPS:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install \
    ca-certificates \
    curl \

Add Docker’s official GPG key:

sudo mkdir -m 0755 -p /etc/apt/keyrings

curl -fsSL | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg

Set up the repository:

echo \
  "deb [arch="$(dpkg --print-architecture)" signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg] \
  "$(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME")" stable" | \
  sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null

Install Docker Engine

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

sudo docker version
sudo docker info
